Security Door Hardware and Installation Checklist

A security-focused exterior door should be evaluated as a complete opening, not as a decorative slab with a strong lock added later. Use this checklist to prepare questions for measurement, product selection, installation and the final walkthrough.
1. Photograph and describe the opening
Take a full interior and exterior photo when safe, plus close-ups of the threshold, hinges, latch area, surrounding trim and visible damage. Note the project city, door type, swing direction and any operation, water or access concern. Photos support the first review but do not replace final field measurements.
2. Inspect the frame and surrounding materials
Look for movement, cracks, soft materials, staining, corrosion or repeated sealant repairs.
Identify whether the opening is wood framing, masonry or another construction type.
Ask how concealed deterioration will be documented and approved if found after removal.
Confirm whether interior and exterior trim, paint or touch-up are included.
3. Confirm swing and clearance
Check furniture, steps, porches, railings, light switches and the path people use every day. Door handing and swing affect hinges, hardware, weather exposure and clearances. Applicable egress and accessibility requirements should be confirmed before ordering.
4. Compare locks, strike and hinge details
Ask which lockset, deadbolt or multipoint system is included; how the strike area is reinforced; what hinge configuration is used; and whether smart-lock, keying or access-control features are compatible. Product availability can depend on size, style and glass selection.
5. Review glass, screen and privacy choices
For doors with glass, compare safety glazing, privacy, visible light, decorative design and the documentation for the exact configuration. For ventilating security or screen doors, examine mesh type, removable panels, insect protection and how the system locks.
6. Check threshold, seals and water management
The scope should identify the sill or threshold, sweep, weatherstripping, corner seals, perimeter sealing and relevant flashing or drainage work. A new door should not be used to conceal an unresolved roof, wall, porch or drainage problem.
7. Ask for exact product documentation
Request the manufacturer and series, ordered size, frame, finish, glass, hardware and any claimed ratings. Impact or pressure documentation applies to a tested assembly and installation method. Avoid absolute promises that a product eliminates forced-entry or storm risk.
