What “energy efficient” means for a replacement window

Start with the NFRC label

Solar heat gain coefficient, often shortened to SHGC, describes how much solar heat enters through the window; lower values admit less solar heat. A very low solar-heat-gain value may help on heavily sun-exposed openings, while visible-light goals and the orientation of the room may lead to a different balance elsewhere. The useful choice is property-specific, not automatically the lowest number on every line.

Low-emissivity coatings are thin layers designed to manage radiant heat transfer while allowing visible light. Insulated glass units normally use two or more panes separated by a sealed space. Use product ratings and a complete installation scope to make the decision. Treat a precise savings percentage as something that needs property-specific evidence, not a universal promise.

Should every window use the same glass package?

Not necessarily. Orientation, shade, room use, appearance and product availability can differ across a home. Consistency may simplify ordering and appearance, while targeted specifications may address particular exposures. Can energy upgrades be completed in phases?

A phased project can prioritize difficult-to-operate units, rooms with strong heat gain or openings with visible concerns.
