Window Replacement in Lafayette, LA

Lafayette homes cover a lot of ground. There are early-1900s bungalows in Sterling Grove, older houses near downtown and in Freetown-Port Rico, and plenty of newer neighborhoods across the parish. What they share is the Acadiana climate: long, humid summers, heavy rain and the occasional hurricane that reaches well inland.

This guide covers what's worth knowing before you replace windows in Lafayette, from storm exposure and historic districts to insurance and what to send us for an estimate.

Lafayette is inland, but storms still reach it

Lafayette isn't on the coast, but Gulf storms don't stop at the marsh. In October 2020, Hurricane Delta made landfall near Creole in Cameron Parish as a Category 2 hurricane. The National Weather Service's Lake Charles office recorded a 75 mph gust in Lafayette during the storm.

That's why we talk through storm protection with Lafayette homeowners too. For some homes, that means impact windows on the most exposed sides. For others, it means good standard windows plus shutters or panels. Our impact windows vs. storm shutters guide lays out both routes. Impact options we install include the Pella Hurricane Shield Series and the NT Window 1800 Series Impact.

Insurance: where Lafayette fits in the new FORTIFIED rules

Starting no later than January 1, 2027, Louisiana insurers must give benchmark discounts on the hurricane portion of premiums for FORTIFIED-designated homes. The Louisiana Department of Insurance sets different discount levels for its North, Central and South regions. It defines the South region as the parishes in Louisiana's statutory Coastal Zone.

Lafayette Parish isn't on that Coastal Zone list, so its discount levels likely differ from parishes like Vermilion or St. Martin. Check LDI's FORTIFIED Benchmarks map for your region.

Two other Lafayette-specific notes:

  • In 2026, LDI added Lafayette Parish to the parishes eligible for the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program. That program offers roof grants of up to $10,000, awarded by lottery when funding is available. It covers roofs, not windows.

  • Windows alone don't earn a FORTIFIED designation. Opening protection is one part of FORTIFIED Silver.

Our FORTIFIED and insurance guide explains the details. Always confirm with your insurer.

Older homes and historic districts

Sterling Grove

The Sterling Grove Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Its nomination describes a residential area built mostly between 1890 and 1934, with many bungalows from the later years. Original wood windows in these homes often have divided-light patterns and trim details worth matching.

Freetown-Port Rico and the Oil Center

Freetown-Port Rico was listed on the National Register in 2016. The Oil Center, developed starting in 1952, became a National Register historic district in 2021. It's mostly offices and businesses rather than homes, and we work on residential projects only.

What National Register listing means for you

The National Park Service says National Register listing generally doesn't restrict what private owners do with their property when they use private funds. Lafayette Consolidated Government notes that listed properties may qualify for historic rehabilitation tax incentives. To qualify, LCG says the project generally needs an approved application before the work starts.

If you're hoping to use a tax credit or abatement, talk to LCG's Planning Division (337-291-7193) before you order windows. If not, you still may want windows that respect the house's look: matching grid patterns, sash proportions and trim.

Choosing windows for Acadiana heat and humidity

Lafayette summers are hot and humid, so glass and frame choices matter:

  • Low-E glass helps control solar heat gain on sun-facing walls. Our energy-efficient windows guide explains the ratings.

  • Frame materials handle heat differently. Andersen, for example, says its Fibrex composite 100 Series handles temperatures up to 150°F without warping, even in dark colors. Our frame materials guide compares options.

  • Condensation and humidity: if you're seeing moisture on or around windows, our condensation and mold guide helps you sort humidity from leaks.

Brick, siding and how the window goes in

Many replacement jobs fit the new window into the existing frame. Others remove more of the old unit. The right method depends on the opening and the condition behind the trim. If your home has brick veneer, ask how the installer will seal and finish the exterior. Our replacement vs. new-construction windows guide explains the difference.

Permits in Lafayette

Building permits in Lafayette are handled by Lafayette Consolidated Government or, outside the city, by the local permitting office for your address. Requirements depend on the scope, especially if an opening changes size. Homes built before 1978 fall under the EPA's lead-safe work rules for window replacement, and Singleton Windows & Doors is EPA lead-safe certified. When your job needs a permit, we pull it for you as part of the job.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need impact windows in Lafayette?

It depends on your goals and your home. Lafayette isn't on the coast, but storms like Hurricane Delta have brought strong gusts. Many homeowners choose impact windows on exposed sides, or shutters, for peace of mind. Your local code official can tell you what's required for your home.

Is Lafayette in the "South" FORTIFIED discount region?

Lafayette Parish isn't in the statutory Coastal Zone that LDI uses for its South region. Check LDI's benchmark map and confirm with your insurer.

Can I replace windows on a house in Sterling Grove?

National Register listing generally doesn't restrict private owners using private funds. If you plan to use historic tax incentives, LCG says you need an approved application before work starts.
