Window Replacement in Thibodaux, LA

Thibodaux has been the seat of Lafourche Parish since 1808, and it grew up along Bayou Lafourche. That history shows in the older homes near downtown and along Jackson Street and Canal Boulevard, alongside newer neighborhoods across town and the Nicholls State University area.

It also sits close to some of the most storm-exposed coastline in the state. This guide covers what Thibodaux homeowners should think about before replacing windows: storm protection, the city's historic district, insurance and how to get a useful estimate.

Storm exposure is real here

On August 29, 2021, Hurricane Ida made landfall near Port Fourchon, in Lafourche Parish, as a Category 4 hurricane. The National Hurricane Center estimated sustained winds of about 150 mph at landfall. Three years later, on September 11, 2024, Hurricane Francine made landfall in neighboring Terrebonne Parish as a Category 2 hurricane.

For many Thibodaux homeowners, the question isn't whether to think about storm protection, but how. The main options:

  • Impact windows and doors, which have laminated glass and tested frames, so there's nothing to put up before a storm. Options we install include the Pella Hurricane Shield Series and the NT Window 1800 Series Impact.

  • Standard windows plus shutters or panels, which you put up when a storm threatens.

  • A mix, with impact products on the most exposed sides and shutters elsewhere.

Our impact windows vs. storm shutters guide compares them, and our impact ratings guide explains what the ratings mean.

Insurance: Lafourche is in LDI's South region

Starting no later than January 1, 2027, Louisiana insurers must give benchmark discounts on the hurricane portion of premiums for FORTIFIED-designated homes. The Louisiana Department of Insurance defines its South region as the parishes in the state's Coastal Zone, and Lafourche Parish is one of them. LDI's South-region benchmarks are 29% for FORTIFIED Roof, 43% for Silver and 49% for Gold, applied to the hurricane portion of the premium only.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • Windows alone don't earn a FORTIFIED designation. Silver requires a FORTIFIED Roof plus protection for every window, exterior door and skylight, along with other items. Gold adds an engineered continuous load path.

  • Wind mitigation inspections are a separate route. LDI says admitted insurers must offer wind mitigation discounts, and opening protection is one of the features the survey records.

Our FORTIFIED and insurance guide explains it step by step. Confirm any discount with your insurer.

Thibodaux's historic district

Thibodaux has a local historic district that the city created by ordinance in 2001. As the ordinance describes it, the district runs roughly from West 1st Street to West 7th and 8th Streets around Jackson Street and Canal Boulevard, out toward President Street on the east side. The city's Historic District Board page has the official map.

What makes Thibodaux different from New Orleans:

  • The 2001 ordinance created the Thibodaux Historic District Advisory Commission. It says the commission serves "in an advisory capacity" and that its "recommendations shall not be binding."

  • The ordinance defines a "historic building" as one at least 50 years old with significant historical, architectural or cultural value, or one listed on the National Register.

  • The city publishes an HDC application, "Guidelines for Decisions" and meeting dates on its website.

The ordinance is from 2001, and the city's current process may have changed. If your home is in the district, check with the City of Thibodaux before you order windows. Even when review is advisory, the guidelines are a helpful way to choose windows that suit an older house: matching sash proportions, grid patterns and trim.

Choosing windows for a Thibodaux home

Glass for heat and humidity

Bayou-country summers are long and humid. Low-E glass helps manage solar heat on sun-facing walls, and good insulated glass keeps interior surfaces warmer in winter, which helps with condensation. See our energy-efficient windows guide and our condensation and mold guide.

Frame material

Vinyl, fiberglass, composite and clad-wood frames all handle sun and moisture differently. Our frame materials guide walks through them, and our brand comparison covers the five brands we install.

Matching an older house

If you're keeping the character of an older home, bring photos of the existing window grids, trim and sills. Some brands offer simulated divided lites and wood interiors that can get closer to the original look.

Planning around storm season

Most replacement windows are made to order, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. If you want impact windows in before the peak of the season, start planning in late winter or spring. Our timing guide has a month-by-month plan.

Permits and older homes

Permit requirements depend on the scope and your address. Changing an opening's size usually needs more review than a same-size replacement. If your home was built before 1978, window replacement falls under the EPA's lead-safe work rules, and Singleton Windows & Doors is EPA lead-safe certified. When your job needs a permit, we pull it for you as part of the job.

What to send for a Thibodaux estimate

  • Your address, and whether the home is in the historic district

  • A list of windows and doors by room, with what bothers you about each

  • Photos inside and out. Our photo guide shows the angles that help.

  • Your storm-protection goals: impact, shutters or a mix

  • Your insurer's requirements, if you're working toward FORTIFIED or a wind mitigation discount

Frequently asked questions

Does Thibodaux's historic district require approval to replace windows?

Under the 2001 ordinance, the commission is advisory and its recommendations aren't binding. Check with the City of Thibodaux for the current process before you order.

Should I get impact windows in Thibodaux?

Given storms like Ida and Francine, many homeowners consider them, at least on exposed sides. Shutters are another option. We'll help you compare.

Will impact windows lower my insurance in Lafourche Parish?

They may help through a wind mitigation discount, depending on your insurer. A FORTIFIED discount requires more than windows. Ask your insurer before you buy.
